Blog: Can the Sun Power our Cars?

Offsetting electric vehicles with solar power is a great way to reduce carbon emissions and create a more sustainable transportation system. When EVs are charged using solar power, the emissions associated with charging the vehicle are close to zero, as solar power is a clean and renewable energy source.

There are several ways to offset EVs with solar power. One way is to install solar panels on the roof of a home or business, and use the solar power to charge the EVs. Homeowners can do this with a home solar panel system that includes a charging station, or by simply plugging the EV into an outlet connected to the solar panel system. At Koulomb, many of our charger configurations include a solar panel canopy, which ensures electricity is sourced renewably onsite and protects EV drivers from the elements while charging their cars. In fact, our company was born from an existing utility-scale solar developer so we know a thing or two about how to harness the power of the sun.

Another way to offset electric vehicles with solar power is through community solar programs, where solar panels are installed in a central location, such as a solar garden, and the solar power generated is distributed to members of that community. This can be an affordable way to access solar power for EV charging, as the costs of installation and maintenance are shared among the community.

Offsetting EVs with solar power can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and create a more sustainable transportation system. After all, it’s only natural.
